Exceptional beauty, varied and sumptuous landscapes,
ROMANIA, a crossroads between West and East, has a d’ environment exceptional beauty. Varied and sumptuous landscapes, a generous and warm rural life and ancestral traditions that endure. CELTIC TREKKING fell under the spell of this unfairly overlooked destination. The "nature" side of Romania is, however, one of the most fabulous there is, with a geography that is both a sanctuary of European biological heritage and the refuge of exciting rural societies. There we find a large part of the Carpathian range, which offers mountains with a sometimes alpine and steep face, but also softer massifs where forests and vast pastures alternate from Maramure, to Bukovina, ending in the Danube. Good-natured hills and valleys, where a maze of aromatic fields unfold, covered with orchards, crops and forests.
Celtic Trekking fell under the spell of this unfairly overlooked destination.
For us, who wanted you to "walk and discover" while staying in Europe, Romania was love at first sight. There is so much to do and see! Magnificent forests, one of the richest wildlife in Europe, traditional agriculture and the extraordinary hospitality that characterizes the inhabitants of rural Romania. Without forgetting the colorful monasteries and houses, the wooden churches....each day of hiking will be enchanting.
So that everyone can find their way, we wanted accommodation to be mainly in homestays, which guarantees the quality and friendliness of contacts, in addition to ensuring them a decent income which allows them to improve their living conditions, to invest in their agricultural operation... Traditional homes, where you can taste hearty family cuisine, most often using farm products.
The guides who accompany you are natives of the regions visited and will be a privileged link with the populations encountered... Of course, the guides will be able to explain and tell you about Romania...in French! Pe curând (See you soon)!

Isolated in the middle and west of the country, the Apuseni Mountains appear on the map as a large pavement of mountains which drifts towards the west and seems to want to be forgotten between the hills of Transylvania and Hungary. Far from everything and devoid of permanent habitat, the heart of the massif is a vast mosaic of limestone, pastures and unfathomable forests. It is here that the bowels of the mountain are revealed. Further down and up to 1300 m above sea level, over tens of kilometers, there are thousands of isolated farms, grouped in small hamlets or scattered between pieces of forest and meadows. Most are only accessible on foot. You encounter a fascinating and courageous mountain civilization.
Period: All year. Recommended periods: from mid‐April to early July and throughout the fall. In winter: small program modifications and heating supplement.
Supervision: Unless unforeseen, your guide is a villager from the Apuseni Mountains (you sleep at his place), qualified, French-speaking and experienced guide. Accommodation: In an inn or with locals in clean, warm traditional houses. In general, a bathroom for 4 to 6 people. This type of accommodation offers us privileged contact with the population. In the event of a cold snap, the houses are heated (earthenware stoves).
Host families, a network of friends: Accommodation is mainly in homestays, which guarantees the quality and friendliness of contacts. Most host families are primarily a network of long-time friends of our local team. Close ties unite us: we share projects, celebrations, mourning and joys. Obviously, they are also loyal partners of the’ agency.
The prices agreed with them are higher than those charged elsewhere and allow them to invest in their farm, in improving their living conditions or in their children's studies... Some reception providers have become guides and this is a great success that we want to continue.
The quality of relationships between us all, the richness of human relationships, this is what makes these trips original and successful.

In the northwest of Romania, near Ukraine, the old country of Maramures remained huddled for a long time in the hollow of its mountains and around its thin wooden churches. An isolation which allowed a unique peasant civilization in Europe to continue to this day. Far from the modern world and its changes, this region has managed to retain a lot of authenticity. This is the strong point of our stays: at each stage, you are received by farmers, our guides and our drivers themselves come from these families. Tourist activity brings recognition and significant additional resources. Our route drags on in this landscape of mid-mountains, grasslands, lush orchards, food crops, forests populated by bears, wolves, and interspersed with lakes and rivers.

The second largest delta in Europe after that of the Volga, the Danube delta covers approximately 5,600 km² located mainly in Romania. Ukraine hosts a small part of it. The delta is part of a group of exceptional ecological value, which includes the delta itself and the adjacent territories: upstream, a series of backwaters, lakes, marshes, bear witness to the ancient paths of the Danube. To the south, Lake Razim, an ancient outlet of the river, and the Sinoe lagoon are very popular with wintering birds. The delta itself is distributed around the three main arms that form the Danube before getting lost in the Black Sea. Since 1992, the Danube Delta has been part of the global network of biosphere reserves. In 1998, the Ukrainian part of the delta was in turn placed in reserve. There are around 1700 plant species, some 3450 animal species, including 160 species of fish and 300 species of birds, including 166 breeders. This wealth of birds is explained by an original geographical location, at the crossroads of migrations, by the variety of ecosystems and by the low human presence.
Accommodation : Inns, hotel and guest rooms: accommodation with fishing families, modest traditional houses -‐the group is sometimes divided between 2 or 3 neighboring houses‐ but clean and comfortable (rooms for 1 to 3 people). On average, one bathroom for 3 bedrooms.

Invaded by the sands, Orthodox, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim cemeteries bear witness to the city's past excitement. Around twenty nationalities rub shoulders there. Details:
Winter is undoubtedly the season when the soul of this country and its taste for harmony can best be guessed. The sublime landscapes of the Carpathians are then swept away by a sharp light. Traces of wolves, necklaces of bells around the horses' necks, sleds running along the paths. Life folds up under the branches of the fir trees or in these houses dressed in colors and snow. It's the season of intimacy, evenings by the earthenware stove, nights under voluptuous quilts. And winter allows you to appreciate inventive and forest cuisine, dominated by the art of soup, scented with herbs and patience, slightly tangy, like walks on the ridges, when the snow cracks under the not.
With the end of the year comes the time of masquerades, the equivalent of the carnival of Western countries. Troops of bears, frightening, satirical or benefactor characters (the horse man), invade the villages. This is particularly the case on the border between the departments of Suceava and Botosani, not far from Casa cu Cerbi. The winter festivals have still retained their excess and authenticity.

Dinner and night with a family of lumberjack farmers 2 or 3 heated bedrooms, 1 bathroom for the 3 bedrooms. |
DAY 03: december 30: Return to the valley in the marinated. Transfer to Casa cu Cerbi for lunch. Recommended for the afternoon: visit to the monasteries of Sucevita and Moldovita. Dinner and overnight at Casa cu Cerbi. |
DAY 04: December 31: Around 8:30 a.m., departure for the villages of the Moldovan hills (approx. 1 hour drive). Winter holidays.
